On September 4, the event “Experience the Supply Chain” took place for university (WO) and university of applied sciences (HBO) students.

Part 2 in Late September and Part 3 in November

The second part of “Experience the Supply Chain” is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25. This day will focus on a general (or deeper) introduction to the logistics sector through various activities, including a VR session. There will also be a meet & greet where information will be shared about opportunities for further development, education, and careers.

In November, the third part will take place, specifically organized for secondary school students. This day will be informal and filled with engaging activities to give students a good impression of the logistics sector, including explanations of education and training options.

LOGISTICS IS THE FUTURE

The first reason is that the logistics sector keeps up with the times. Behind every large logistics operation is a high level of automation. Think, for example, of ordering products online (e-commerce, e-fulfillment). In some cases, orders are delivered to consumers the very same day. To make this possible, logistics professionals are needed to come up with innovative solutions—solutions that improve, simplify, and make processes more sustainable.

Due to the rapid growth of the e-commerce industry, large distribution centers are emerging, making the outlook for job opportunities and job security in the logistics sector very promising.

A DYNAMIC LOGISTICS WORLD

The second reason is that the logistics sector is challenging. Managing the delivery of the right products at the right time and place is not easy. No two days are the same in logistics. The key is to avoid disruptions in the system. One day may be focused on further developing part of the system, while the next might be about fixing a system error.

Systems need to run 24/7, and globalization means companies and their customers are constantly demanding more. The focus of businesses is shifting more and more from national to international.

VARIED TASKS

The third reason is that “logistics professional” is a broad term. This means a logistics employee can work in many different links of the logistics chain, across various companies within the sector—and beyond. Tasks may range from operational to tactical, strategic, or supportive roles.

Examples include scheduling transport, inventory management, creating transport documents, dealing with customs processes, and responding to major changes like Brexit and modal shifts. But logistics also involves fields like IT, Marketing, Business Development, Sales, Tenders, Customs, and customer service.
